Cherokee Area Council - History Moment: Troop 103 in Tracy City, Tennessee
One of the most beloved Scoutmaster in the Cherokee Area Council during the 1930's and 1940's was Reverend Alfonzo Constantine (A.C.) Adamz. He was also the vicar of Christ Church Episcopal (Tracy City, TN) from 1927 to 1841. Scoutmaster/ Rev. Adamz was the developer and caretaker of the Grundy Museum of Nature Specimens, assembled by himself and the boys of Troop 103 located in Tracy City. It all started on December 10, 1927 when Father Adamz stuffed and mounted a dead English sparrow brought to him by one of his Scouts. At the time he knew nothing about taxidermy but he was looking for a way to motivate the troop of boys that he had just become their leader. Most of the nature items in the museum that had been skinned, stuffed and mounted for display, were collected by the boys while hiking and camping all around the Cumberland Plateau. The largest section included over 4,200 snakes! By 1941, Scoutmaster Adamz and his boys had amassed over 30,000 specimens! In the years since that time, the museum collection decayed and was abandoned but there are still active scouts in Grundy County, Tennessee in Boy Scout Troop 12 and Cub Scout Pack 3212!
