Cherokee Area Council - History Moment: The Troop 30 Scout Cabin
Troop 30 was formed in 1929 at what is now Brainerd United Methodist Church. In early 1930, efforts began to build the scouts their own meeting place. Logs were donated from land now covered by Harrison Bay. By March 1930, scouts had excavated the site, and cut and peeled the logs. Charles Peacock, Chattanooga Scout Executive, laid the cornerstone. In April, 1930, President Herbert Hoover wrote Troop 30 congratulating them on their cabin! The original letter is still on display in Brainerd UMC.
For the next 54 years, the cabin was used regularly by the Troop, by Cub Scout Pack 3009, and the Girl Scout Troop also. By 1983, however, a contractor checked the logs and declared they were beyond reasonable repair. A new cabin was built, reusing the original chimney. It was dedicated February 24th, 1985, with scores of Troop 30 alumni present.
For 35 years the new cabin was home to Troop 30, with the sign above the door, “Through these portals pass the best scouts in the world.” When the church expanded in the mid-90s, the cabin was moved to its current location. Although Troop 30 is no longer active, the cabin can still be seen behind the church, and has been given new life as home to one of the church’s ministries.
